The episode of The Learning Channel's "The Hunt for
Amazing Treasures", which aired January 28, 1997, featured
the Gem Mountain Gemstone Mine on the Cash and Treasures
Show.
This show is about people who have found amazing gemstone
treasures in the Western, NC area. Betty Cain of
Parkersburg, WV, found a 1,000 ct ruby while fluming at Gem
Mountain. Betty was on vacation in Spruce Pine when she found the
ruby among her many gemstones.
Charles Buchanan (Gem Mountain owner) gave the crew of
TLC a tour of the Brushy Creek Mine, including a mine shot.
He also gave a history of gemstone mining in Mitchell
County.
The Travel Channel has done 2 specials on Gem Mountain which
are still being aired.
